Academic Curriculum
Class 2 follows a carefully planned two-year curriculum cycle that supports children's transition from Reception into Key Stage 1. Through an ambitious and engaging curriculum, pupils build secure foundations in knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all subjects.
Learning is practical, purposeful and carefully sequenced, enabling children to make meaningful connections across the curriculum. Through exploration, discussion and first-hand experiences, pupils develop confidence, independence and resilience as learners.
High-quality teaching, adaptive practice and appropriate challenge ensure that every child is supported to achieve their potential and flourish.

Phonics & Reading
Children continue their reading journey in Class 2 through daily teaching of our systematic synthetic phonics programme, Twinkl Phonics. This progressive approach develops secure phonics knowledge and supports children in becoming confident, fluent readers. Reading books are carefully matched to each child's stage of development, including their phonic knowledge, reading fluency and comprehension, enabling them to practise and apply their skills successfully. As pupils move through Year 1 and Year 2, they are supported in developing the confidence and independence needed to become enthusiastic, capable readers.
Alongside our phonics and reading provision, we actively promote a love of reading through high-quality texts, story time, whole-class reading and regular opportunities for reading for pleasure. We want every child to develop a lifelong enjoyment of books and reading.
Statutory Assessment
Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
The Phonics Screening Check is a short assessment taken by children in Year 1 each June. It helps teachers assess how well pupils can use their phonics knowledge to read words. Children are prepared through daily phonics lessons and regular reading practice, helping them approach the check with confidence. If needed, additional support is provided and the check can be retaken in Year 2.
Year 2 SATs
At the end of Key Stage 1, children take part in optional national assessments in reading and mathematics. Data is not reported nationally. These assessments are used alongside teachers' ongoing assessment of pupils' work throughout the year to build a clear picture of each child's attainment and progress.
At St Peter's, we place the greatest importance on daily learning and teacher assessment. Our aim is for every child to feel confident, supported and proud of their achievements as they continue their learning journey into Key Stage 2.
How Parents Can Support Learning at Home

You can support your child by:
- Reading together every day and discussing books.
- Practising phonics, spellings and number facts regularly.
- Encouraging curiosity by talking about what they are learning at school.
- Providing opportunities for practical learning, exploration and play.
- Celebrating effort, independence and perseverance.
By working together, we can ensure that every child develops the strong foundations in knowledge, skills and confidence they need to flourish throughout Key Stage 1 and beyond.
