Reading

At St Peter's, we believe that reading is the key to unlocking learning across the curriculum and preparing children for the opportunities and challenges of the wider world. Reading begins with the secure foundations established through our systematic synthetic Twinkl Phonics programme and develops into a lifelong skill that enables children to access knowledge, think critically and communicate effectively.

Our reading curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils develop the knowledge and skills set out in the National Curriculum. As children progress through the school, they build fluency, accuracy and stamina while developing increasingly sophisticated comprehension skills. Pupils learn to retrieve information, make inferences, predict outcomes, explain vocabulary in context, summarise key ideas and discuss the impact of an author's language and choices. We place a strong emphasis on vocabulary development, recognising its importance in learning across all subjects.

Reading for pleasure lies at the heart of our approach. Through daily reading opportunities, high-quality class texts and the Accelerated Reader programme, we encourage children to develop positive reading habits, independence and a genuine love of books. Regular discussions about texts help pupils deepen their understanding, justify opinions and make meaningful connections between their reading and the wider curriculum.

By developing fluent readers with strong comprehension, rich vocabulary and a love of reading, we equip children with the knowledge, cultural capital and confidence needed to flourish in secondary school and beyond. Through reading, pupils learn not only how to access knowledge, but also how to become thoughtful, articulate and compassionate young people who are ready to make a positive contribution to the world.
