Academic Curriculum
Class 4 follows a carefully planned two-year curriculum cycle that supports children's transition from Lower Key Stage 2 into Upper Key Stage 2 and prepares them for their next step into secondary school.
In Class 4, pupils are challenged to think deeply, demonstrate resilience and strive for excellence. Our ambitious curriculum enables children to develop secure knowledge, subject-specific skills and the independence needed for the next stage of their education.
Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, apply their knowledge confidently and think critically when solving problems. As the oldest pupils in the school, they are also given opportunities to lead, serve and contribute positively to the life of the school community.
Through high expectations, support and challenge, pupils leave St Peter's as confident, compassionate and successful learners, fully prepared for secondary school and beyond.

Reading
At St Peter's, we believe that reading is the key to unlocking learning across the curriculum and preparing children for the opportunities and challenges of the world ahead. In Years 5 and 6, pupils continue to develop the advanced reading skills outlined in the National Curriculum, including fluency, comprehension, inference, vocabulary development and critical thinking. Through exposure to a wide range of high-quality texts, we aim to nurture confident, independent readers who are equipped for secondary school and lifelong learning.
Reading for pleasure remains at the heart of our approach. Every day, children enjoy at least 20 minutes of dedicated reading time, allowing them to explore authors, genres and themes that interest and inspire them. Alongside this, we use the Accelerated Reader programme to support reading progress and encourage independence. After finishing a book, pupils complete an online quiz to demonstrate their understanding, helping teachers to monitor achievement, celebrate success and guide children towards appropriately challenging texts.

Through daily reading, meaningful discussion, careful text selection and a culture that celebrates reading for pleasure, we aim to develop knowledgeable, articulate and compassionate young people who are ready to thrive in secondary education and beyond.
Statutory Assessment
Year 6 SATs
As part of the National Curriculum, pupils in Year 6 complete the end of Key Stage 2 Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) in May. These assessments provide an opportunity for children to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout their primary education in reading, mathematics, grammar, punctuation and spelling.
At St Peter's, we view SATs as just one part of a child's journey. Throughout Years 5 and 6, children are supported to develop confidence, resilience, independence and strong learning habits, alongside the academic knowledge needed for success. Our broad and ambitious curriculum ensures that pupils continue to enjoy rich learning experiences across all subjects, while gradually becoming familiar with the types of questions and assessment techniques they may encounter.
Year 5 plays an important role in preparing pupils for the challenges of Upper Key Stage 2, helping them to build secure foundations in core skills and develop positive attitudes towards learning. By Year 6, our aim is for every child to approach SATs with confidence and perspective, recognising that the assessments are simply one measure of their achievements. Above all, we strive to develop well-rounded, compassionate and resilient young people who are fully prepared for a successful transition to secondary school and the opportunities that lie ahead.
