Modern Foreign Languages

At St Peter's, we believe that learning a modern foreign language opens children's minds to new cultures, perspectives and opportunities. In Key Stage 2, pupils are taught by a subject specialist and learn Spanish through a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops the key National Curriculum strands of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Through regular practice and meaningful communication, children build confidence in using a new language while developing an understanding of how languages work.

Pupils learn to communicate using familiar vocabulary and phrases, gradually extending their understanding of grammar, pronunciation and sentence structure. They are encouraged to listen attentively, engage in conversations, express opinions, read age-appropriate texts and write for a range of purposes. As their knowledge grows, children begin to make connections between Spanish and English, deepening their understanding of language as a whole.

Language learning also plays an important role in developing cultural capital. Through the study of Spanish language and culture, pupils gain an appreciation of different traditions, communities and ways of life. They are encouraged to be curious about the wider world, respectful of others and confident in communicating with people from different backgrounds. Events such as European Day of Languages and wider cultural celebrations further enrich this learning and help children recognise the diversity of modern society.

Our MFL curriculum provides strong foundations for future language learning at secondary school while developing communication skills, curiosity and global awareness. Through learning another language, we help children become confident, respectful and outward-looking individuals who are prepared to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
