Physical Education

Our PE curriculum is designed specifically for St Peter's by our specialist PE teacher and promotes physical competence, confidence and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.

Fully aligned with the National Curriculum, it provides children with opportunities to develop and apply a broad range of physical skills through games, athletics, gymnastics, dance, outdoor and adventurous activities, and competitive sport.

Through carefully sequenced learning, pupils develop fundamental movement skills, physical literacy, teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship. As they progress through the school, children build on prior learning, refine techniques and develop increasing confidence in applying skills in a variety of sporting contexts. We encourage pupils to set personal goals, respond positively to challenge and understand the importance of perseverance, fair play and respect for others.

Our curriculum places a strong emphasis on promoting physical and mental wellbeing, helping children understand the benefits of leading healthy, active lifestyles. Alongside high-quality PE lessons, pupils have opportunities to participate in festivals, competitions, clubs and leadership roles, enabling them to develop confidence, responsibility and a sense of achievement.

In Years 5 and 6, pupils participate in a programme of swimming lessons for at least one term, ensuring they have the opportunity to meet and exceed National Curriculum expectations. Through swimming, children develop water confidence, learn a range of strokes and acquire essential water safety and self-rescue skills, preparing them to stay safe in and around water throughout their lives.

Through PE, we aim to develop not only skilled and active pupils, but also resilient, determined and collaborative young people who understand the importance of caring for their physical and mental wellbeing. As people created in the image and likeness of God, we encourage children to value their bodies, use their gifts wisely and develop healthy habits that enable them to flourish both now and in the future.
